Merch-Isle: Kicks by Tegan and Sara

This isn’t the first time  Tegan and Sara have ventured into the shoe design world. And, I’ll be honest I think this particular set of designs is a vast improvement on last years DC model. This could largely be due to the fact that I prefer the look of Macbeth to DC in general. Or it could have something to do the overabundance of green on that shoe. Either way this whole thing has gotten me thinking about the merch tables at shoes. They used to be pretty straight forward. Or maybe thats just some latent retro romanticism talking, pop bands from the 60’s did after all have a rediculous amount of product tie in with lunch boxes, pencils, frisbees, thermoses, plates and the like. But really, pins, T-shirts, posters and albums. Does a band really need anything more than that?  At what point do we stop being fans and become merely walking billboards, I mean these shoes even have the appropriate twin’s initials emblazoned on the instep.  Perhaps this is why my favorite band shirts have no overt reference to the band themselves.   At any rate I love that Tegan and Sara actually have an art director, the ever faithful, so-called “third member of the band” Emy Storey, who remains one of my favorite graphic designers.

Update:

Since I first wrote this post the shoes have been officially released, and as a result, in typical Tegan and Sara fashion, there is an accompanying web video.  Its pretty funny, which is also pretty typical.  Anyway, I thought I’d share and if the video still leaves you wanting more head to their here for an additional interview.

Becky has a *thing* for Macbeths. I’m sneakily thinking of getting one of these for her (probably Tegan’s—the black just has that extra kick (ha.)).
