R.I.P. – Ari Up: punk rock heroine

21 Oct

For those of you who haven’t heard, the death of punk rock icon Ariane Foster, better known by her stage name Ari Up, was announced yesterday on John Lydon’s website on behalf of his wife, and Ariane’s mother, Nora Foster.  I caught the announcement late on account of flying across the country yesterday, and have found myself surprisingly upset over the death of someone I have never met.

Up formed The Slits when she was only 14 years old and was all of 16 at the time of Cut’s release which is just mind boggling when you think about it.  News of her death has made waves across the music community and there are more than a few touching elegies that are worth reading.

Ari Up was a musical pioneer by anyone’s standards and helped to create one of the most widely respected albums, punk or otherwise, of the last 50 years.  Her flamboyance and brazen attitude helped inspire thousands of young women coming up after her to be nothing less than fierce in their commitment to music and mayhem.  So yes she was a stranger to me, but in her death we will all feel a loss.  And if you don’t already appreciate The Slits, here are some video’s to prove why you should.
